Victorian Stone Liverpool Crest of Arms

This stone relief carved with the Liverpool Crest of Arms came from Liverpool’s first workhouse, in Kirkdale. Featuing the Official Coat of Arms of Liverpool, a heraldic design granted in 1797. With the mythical Liver Bird, historically based on a cormorant. In its beak, it holds a sprig of laver seaweed, a pun on the city’s name. Left, Neptune: the Roman god of the sea, shown with a crown and holding a banner of Liverpool’s arms. Right, Triton: Neptune’s son, often depicted blowing a conch shell and holding a banner with a ship under sail.
“Founded in 1732, Liverpool’s first parish workhouse was erected at the corner of College Lane and Hanover Street.
